To paraphrase Jack Black, “who doesn‘t wanna ROCK?!?” As the social space continues to evolve it‘s important for us to establish a unique identity. We‘ve always maintained that attitude and lifestyle are as important as the actual game mechanics and graphics. This is every bit as true in the social space. If you love how a game makes you feel, you are going to share it with your friends. If playing WITH your friends makes you enjoy the experience even more, you‘ll share with more friends. And so on…connecting people through play. [mw] Corey is absolutely right, we want to make a fun way for people to connect together, and then give them the tools through play to bring their own personality through. As games evolve, you‘ll see it more become the reflection of the player and less the reflection of some designer. How many developers are currently on staff at Detonator? [cd] Just the 3 founders right now.

We all work really hard and wear many hats so we can cover a lot of disciplines. The 3 of us are like 9 regular people. I just love what I do, too. So I‘m always working on things….but it has never once felt like “work”. [mw] Our first game is just the 3 of us, but as we start on the next game, we will start growing our team. Great flash developers are always welcome. How does designing and developing a game for social networking sites differ from ‘traditional‘ game development? [cd] In many ways it is remarkably similar. We have code and asset libraries structured just like we would with a traditional game. We have morning scrum meetings. We have very similar discussions about game design, usability, and player feedback. And in some ways it‘s very different. The tools we‘re using to produce the final product are the things we used in the past to rapid prototype.

We‘re using tons of off-the-shelf solutions. We‘re also developing super fast, not needing to worry about the decision that we make today haunting us by crippling some pipeline 6 years down the road. Most significantly, I think we‘re way more involved with the community than we would be with a traditional game. [mw] From a production standpoint, it‘s remarkably the same. The most successful social games from Zynga or Playfish are no different than MMO‘s. They have an extended live beta, they focus on microtransactions to support an ongoing live team. They have exploiters, and farmers, and rely on a strong community to grow. They are just done on a much smaller scale. From my perspective this is a very healthy thing for the gaming world. This will allow for some very cool innovation in a much smaller time than the typical 5 year development cycle of current large scale MMO‘s. Also, we are thinking of gamers in a completely different light. It‘s great when your best customer doesn‘t consider themselves as a gamer. Is it ‘easier‘ to develop warhammer en venta mobile and website games than it is to develop a traditional computer game? Why or why not? [cd] Well, yes. Emphatically.

One of my favorite RP elements within Lord of the Rings Online is the housing. With neighborhoods dedicated to each race and located in near-appropriate locations, being able to buy characters their own homes goes a very long way towards fostering the art of roleplaying. Last RoleCraft issue, I wrote about The Adventure, about rekindling that thrill for roleplaying through quests and instances that perhaps you‘ve trudged through hundreds of times before. This issue can be looked at as sort of a balance, by revisiting the value of home ownership in regards to roleplaying in MMORPGs that allow it. Home buying was, to my gaming memory, first introduced within Ultima Online. Since then, many, but not all, MMORPGs have also allowed players to buy and sometimes build their own homes in game. For non-roleplayers, this may not hold much interest. For many roleplayers I know, being able to have their characters inhabit a dwelling of their own is often considered to be a standard part of gaming, frowning upon games that don‘t have it.

All that revolves around one solid gameplay aspect that I hear roleplayers and non-roleplayers alike constantly asking for, and that is to feel a great interaction between themselves and the game world. This is what housing provides. I think it helps players feel established, more so than any guild or kinship can, and it represents a rooted presence, a way for players to have their characters leave their mark in the game world. Above and beyond that base, housing opens the door for a huge amount of roleplaying events. On one end, they can be as grand as hosting large gatherings of friends, family, and guilds, only limited by the size of the house. On the other end, they can be a players‘ sanctuary, base of operations, and armory, among other things. Houses within an actual RP neighborhood may help facilitate the meeting of roleplayers who, wandering about the wild places of the game world, may never chance upon meeting each other. A character‘s home is a character‘s castle, as the saying could go. Indeed, in Ultima Online, small castles can be bought and built. But more to the point of the saying, a home allows players a safe refuge from the day-to-day adventuring life. They are also a place to store goods and crafts, and to showcase the same.

In UO, the housing construction process is of such quality that, not only can players build a home, they may also build stores, museums, arts and crafts galleries, libraries, inns, and other imaginative places. UO is an example of what I call open housing, where players may come upon houses almost anywhere in the game world. Then again, that very fact is one of the drawbacks to this style of housing. There are simply some places where a house shouldn‘t be. Yet, it still works well in UO, in my opinion, and the benefit it serves for roleplaying makes up for the cons. The other type of housing is instanced, where housing is separated from the main game world. Examples of this type include LotRO and Anarchy Online. It‘s a hard call, but I tend to like this type more than the other, mainly for the relative security away from non-RP smacktards it provides. Here, roleplayers can congregate outside in the open world and Aion oro interact with each other for the most part without hindrance.

From the first time I heard the name Casta Gaunt, I knew he was a bad guy. Names are important. When we name something, we define it. Jolly, carefree characters aren‘t named Gaunt. The name conjured an image of a thin man — thin on patience and thin of spirit. It‘s also related to the word gauntlet, and Casta rules with an iron fist. Players first hear rumors of Casta Gaunt when they visit Oilville. Soon, they discover that Casta controls the prison in Old Kingman while his goons harass the local population. By the time players enter the area, Casta‘s power is well cemented. Old Kingman is a war zone.

The prison and half the town are under Casta‘s control. Gaunt‘s Raiders have driven refugees north to Needle Eye, where the exiles are barred from the safety of an unwelcoming town. Further, Gaunt‘s Raiders have seized the town of Linewood, holding civilians hostage and executing resistance leaders. Casta‘s role wasn‘t always that well defined, however. An earlier background included his role as Alec Masters‘ head of security. In that first history, after the Hoover Dam fell, he grabbed up remnants of Masters‘ flunkies and formed his own group, Gaunt‘s Raiders. Over the course of development, he was also pasted into the background of another raider group, the Night Wolves.

DC Universe Online developers have let loose one angry undead bad boy in Solomon Grundy. WarCry has scored a bunch of concept art and screenshots of this ticked off zombie villain. Check him out: Solomon Grundy? is part zombie and part plant, a bizarre, centuries-old half-human life form filled with confused anger. At times he is a rampaging monster, at others a calculating and coldblooded villain. Solomon Grundy‘s enhanced strength makes him a threat even to the DC Universe‘s strongest heroes. As an Aion oro immortal, massive blows or injuries can‘t kill or hurt him – afterwards, he simply regenerates to rise again.

Multi-Sized Rigs Currently, you have a Trimark Armor Pump I which costs around 15 million ISK on the markets today and can be fitted to any ship with a rig slot and enough calibration points. What we are doing is splitting this rig into three types; small, medium and large with the same effect but scaling material costs. This makes city sieges happen less, and getting to Stage 2 of a siege simply doesn‘t happen if the opposing Realm doesn‘t wish to participate. This is due to an inordinate amount of emphasis being put on the Rank 8-29 city Scenario. These issues result in Warlord gear being near impossible to gain, let alone Sovereign. Can we expect any changes to this system, moving forward? A. Yes, we are intently focusing on the contested city content to ensure that they are both challenging and rewarding. Regarding the Rank 8-29 city siege Scenario-when we introduced this Scenario to the lower Ranks, we actually decreased the amount of impact it has on the success or failure of a city capture.

When will Keep takes and city invasions resemble the intro movie? Meaning, when will assault towers and other means of breaching a Keep/Fortress/capital city come into the game? A.
